YEARS AT CWC:
MSE in School Counseling / 2007 / UW Oshkosh. BA in Business Education. Minor in Psychology / 1993 / Dordt University
I received my Master's Degree in Education - School Counseling, from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Previously, I graduated from Dordt University with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Education as well as a Minor in Psychology. I have enjoyed teaching at CWC for the past 26 years. I have enjoyed teaching in a variety of areas such as general math, computers, business, accounting, and psychology courses. In the past I have also coached JV and Varsity volleyball. Since high school, I always looked forward to being a school counselor. I enjoy developing a Christian school counseling program at CWC to better serve the students and families at CWC!
I am married to Brad Schouten who is an alumnus of CWC. We have been and continue to be blessed by watching our three children, Joshua, Jolie and Jenna all attend CWC and grow academically and most importantly in their personal walks with Christ. They have been or are currently involved in many activities here at CWC from choir, band, forensics, student council, b4 Bible study and athletics. But they would say the most important thing at CWC is the relationships they have with teachers and of course their friends! We are very pleased that our oldest has also chosen to continue his post secondary education at a Christian University to discover God's plan for his life.
MOST ENJOYABLE AT CWC:
As a teacher, a highlight of my position at CWC is teaching the subject areas I thoroughly enjoyed in high school and seeing my students find connections outside of the classroom. However, my passion is the one-on-one interaction that I can experience with students outside of the classroom such as in small groups and in my counseling role. My days have a lot of excitement and variety as I am able to work with students from Kindergarten all the way through seniors in high school. I enjoy working with students as they work on discovering who God has created them to be, possible career options, and in their relationships with others.
As a parent, I enjoy the love the teachers have for not only the academic side of my children, but also the spiritual and emotional side. Hearing my kids talk about a teacher that takes time out of their busy schedule to get them reminds me why we have chosen CWC for our children. Another neat aspect that I have seen as a parent, is the cross-grade friendships that my children have formed. My kids have all had friends in their grade, as well as grades above and below.
FAVORITE BIBLE PASSAGE:
This was a great passage for me while going through school myself and remains a favorite to me as a mother, counselor and teacher: "Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits - who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalm 103: 1-5
